Technical Requirements

Excellent ski technique for off-piste descents in moderately steep terrain (35–40°). You can descend anywhere; if not with stylish turns, then by side-slipping… No style points are awarded.

Ascents up to 1500 meters with skins are enjoyable for you. Short, steep portages (carrying skis on the backpack) are more fun than scary.

You can ascend on a track with crampons even if it's somewhat hard. You've practiced kick turns beforehand and can navigate corners without falling.

Mental & Physical Requirements

Being on skis every day is more strenuous than a single-day tour with 1500 meters of ascent. Even though the regular Urner Haute Route involves fewer elevation gains. Prepare well for the tour days with regular training and tours. This makes the whole experience much more enjoyable for you. The UHR is technically more demanding than the classic Chamonix-Zermatt route. Alpine technical knowledge is advantageous but not mandatory.

Basic experience with avalanche transceivers, probes, shovels, and avalanche prevention is desirable.

Mandatory Equipment

The avalanche safety set (probe, transceiver, shovel) and the alpine set are mandatory!
*If the tour cannot be conducted due to external conditions, we will offer you an alternative tour.

Can I participate as a splitboarder?
In principle, yes. We expect you to be in excellent physical condition, have strong downhill technique, and be able to perform kick turns effortlessly in steep terrain using crampons.

We recommend arriving in Engelberg the day before.
You can store your gear at the mountain guide office in Engelberg. On the first day, we’ll travel by taxi to Andermatt/Realp – this transfer is organized by us. Of course, you can also travel to Andermatt/Realp on your own and meet us there.

Am I fit enough for the tour?
Being on skis every day is more demanding than just doing a single-day tour with 1,500 vertical meters. Even though the standard Urner Haute Route involves fewer vertical meters overall, the cumulative effort is greater. Prepare yourself well with regular training and ski tours. That way, you’ll enjoy the experience much more. The UHR is technically more demanding than the famous Chamonix–Zermatt route.

What happens if the tour has to be cancelled?
We always try to carry out the tour as planned. If conditions don’t allow it, we will organize an alternative program and may complete part of the original tour. The final decision lies with the mountain guide.

What skis are best for this tour?
We recommend a light touring ski that’s still fun on the descents. A ski with a width of 90–100 mm is a solid choice.

What is included in the price?
The price includes the mountain guide’s fee and his expenses. Not included are the hut overnights (approx. CHF 80 per night), meals and drinks in the huts, and the transfer from Engelberg to Realp.
