Can children also go via ferrata?
Yes, absolutely! Do not overstrain children and only walk simple climbs with them. Rope safety from above mandatory for children under 40kg.

What exactly is a via ferrata?
A via ferrata is a climbing tour through a rock face or to a mountain peak with artificial steps and grips. Solid steel cables that are always available, iron intermediate safety devices and a via ferrata set protect against falls.

Climbing routes are booming – what makes them so popular?
All sports in the mountains are booming, including the via ferrata. Without much climbing knowledge, the “ferratist” (via ferrata climber) can climb breathtaking peaks or get an adrenaline rush in the vertical.

What are the basic requirements to be met before the first visit to the via ferrata?
A modern via ferrata set (climbing harness, via ferrata brake and helmet) is mandatory. Going on a via ferrata with acute fear of heights is not smart. Depending on the length and difficulty of the climb, you need fitness for the ascent & (!!) descent.

Do you have to be able to climb?
No. Sport climbing or multi-pitch climbing are completely different sports than via ferrata.

Is an introductory course necessary?
Yes, we recommend the guided via ferrata tours of Engelberg Mountain Guides.
In addition, the Rock & Safety Days take place in Engelberg every summer. Free training from the mountain guide: http://www.engelberg.ch/packages-deals/rock-safety-days/

What are absolute taboos on the via ferrata?
The steel cable for the fuse is the best lightning conductor on the mountain. Everything else is self-explanatory.

Accidents are on the increase. What is the most common mistake?
Overstrain and blockage due to exhaustion.

When will I be ready for the next level of difficulty?
As soon as you feel fit enough. Self-assessment is something very important on the mountain. The same goes for the via ferrata.

In recent years, via ferrata have sprouted like mushrooms out of the ground. Some have numerous fun elements. Doesn’t the mountain degenerate into an amusement park? The mountains grow more and more into an amusement park. But as long as the paths are accessible at places that are already used for tourism, we personally don’t see any problem. In this way it is possible to dam the intensive tourism in a narrow space and there will always be enough space for nature and the environment.
