It happens quickly—your rope gets stuck while pulling it down, your belay device drops, or you miss the rappel anchor and need to climb back up. What now?

In this course, we’ll teach you techniques to confidently handle common climbing mishaps with ease.

Course Content:

  • Solutions for a stuck rope while rappelling

  • Rappelling without a tube, ATC, etc.

  • Missing an anchor while rappelling (self-rescue techniques)

  • Rope extension (blocking knot, friction knot, etc.)

  • Overcoming difficult climbing sections with technical aids (foot sling and other tools)

  • Assisting a struggling second climber from above (pulley system or lowering via tube device)

  • First aid and improvised transport

Requirements:

  • Good physical condition

  • Experience in multi-pitch and rock climbing

  • Lead climbing level of 5b on rock

  • Proficiency in essential knots

Course Location:
Engelberg / Central Switzerland

Detailed Program:

  • Meeting at the mountain guide office in Engelberg, welcome, and equipment check

  • Initial assessment and discussion of course objectives

  • Equipment overview & brief theory session

  • Practical training according to course content

  • Course conclusion around 5:00 PM in Engelberg

Price

The price includes planning and guiding by a certified mountain guide, as well as their expenses.

Not included: Personal transportation costs, any cable car tickets, and personal consumption.

When will you decide if the course takes place due to the weather?
We will update you 2–3 days before the course. If the weather forecast is unstable, we may have to make a last-minute decision. The course can also take place indoors.

What happens in bad weather, e.g., rain all day?
In case of bad weather, the course will either be held at another location in Central Switzerland (Engelberg Valley, Sisikon Uri) or in a climbing gym.

Can beginners participate?
We recommend this course for climbers who already have experience on rock and have been on multi-pitch routes.
